Last February I was inspired to do the unthinkable; count my containers – and thus admit that things might just have gotten a bit out of hand. I wasn’t going to take that dangerous step alone however, I wanted company and thankfully a couple of gardening friends were willing to play along. This post was the result. To refresh you on the results: Eric came in at 158, I had 228 and Grace was tops with 248.
Fast forward to July 17th when I read this post from my friends Mark and Gaz who blog at Alternative Eden. They’d caught the bug, bad. Time for a recount? Game On! (more…)
Big leaves, spiky leaves…my love for both is well documented. However, I’m also drawn to the tiniest of leaves and especially love them when seen in combination with the big ones. It’s all about the contrast. (more…)
Someone has been adjusting the color in my garden. Several of my cherished dark burgundy and purple foliage plants have gone green. I am not happy with this development. Is it the heat? The relentless sun?
Stop laughing! Yes I garden in Portland, Oregon but it’s been hot, darn hot (mid to upper 90’s hot for days and days) and dry – very dry. My favorite weather guy is calling it a historic weather event. Is that what’s turning my brown eyes blue dark foliage green? (more…)
I am blessed to live in an area with great nurseries and great gardeners. That point was driven home again last weekend when I crashed a friend’s open garden. Our local Hardy Plant Society was playing host to gardeners from all over the Pacific Northwest (and beyond) for the annual Study Weekend. The event alternates between Portland, Salem/Eugene, Seattle and Vancouver/Victoria BC (all great gardening cities).
It’s time for those big summer movie blockbusters: superheroes, dinosaurs, car chases and gardens. Wait, what? Gardens? Ya, when was the last time a garden (or gardener) played a key role on the big screen?
June 4-6 were the dates of the 2015 Garden Bloggers Fling, held in Toronto, Canada. That’s the official group photo above, pretty snazzy with the Toronto skyline in the background – don’t you think? This was the 8th annual event, last year, 2014, a group of Portland bloggers played host to 80 bloggers from around the world. Plant lust was a sponsor of that event, supplying the swag bags which other sponsors filled with fabulous freebies for the attendees. (more…)
My friend and fellow blogger Anna, who blogs at Flutter & Hum, has been posting a single photo, sometimes two, on Wednesdays under the theme “Wednesday Vignette.” Anna’s got a great eye for color and pattern, and these posts tend to display that gift. She’s encouraged others to post on the theme and today I thought I’d join in with this very busy photo I took in my garden. (more…)
If you’re like me, and you feel the compulsion to garden, you will find a way to do so – no matter what your circumstances. Last December I was strolling down Burbank Blvd in North Hollywood (killing time, getting fresh air, while my husband scoured a book store) and happened upon a scene that had me thinking back to my days without a piece of earth on which to garden.
It’s been quite exciting, watching new planter boxes go up all around me. For a couple of weeks it seemed every day’s dog-walk yielded a new development. Then came the plants, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, strawberries, lettuces, kale…no wonder I’d come home hungry. Now that we’re almost in June (!) things are starting to settle down and I’m having fun watching things grow…
