Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Vaccinium ovatum 'Scarlet Ovation' is a great selection of our native evergreen huckleberry. The foliage is small, ovate, evergreen and glossy but when it first emerges it is a dramatic bronze-red gradually fading to dark green in the summer. Easy to grow and compact to 2-3 feet tall and wide. Pink, urn-shaped flowers give way to showy, edible, dark blue to near-black berries in late summer. Self-fertile. Use as an informal hedge, specimen, and in pots on the patio. Drought tolerant once established. Tolerant of full shade but may not flower and fruit. Hummingbird and butterfly attractor. Deer resistant.

The bright-red new growth in spring on this select Huckleberry is a real treat, especially when these are planted en masse; selected from the native evergreen Huckleberry for brighter spring color and more compact growth; the leaves mature to dark-green on this fine 3' x 3' shrublet and springs tiny white flowers become tasty dark-blue fruit in August. This is an outstanding and nearly maintenance free plant for the edible landscape. S-PSH/M
