(Chinese Ground Orchid) Hardy, perennial orchid, 12-18” stems in late spring are topped with pink-lavender orchids; slowly expanding clumps in light shade, morning sun, well drained, organic soil that is moist during growth and bloom. Lovely at woodland edge! USDA Z5-9 3” pot
Bletilla striata ‘Shi-Ran’ is an easy to grow, deciduous terrestrial Orchid displaying wide, green, pleated, elliptical leaves and upright spikes of blue-purple orchids. Grows almost anywhere but prefers a rich, well-drained soil with adequate moisture. Water during growing season. This is not a plant for the dry shady garden.
This is a cultivar being exported from Holland. The flower color is a shade darker than typical so that is good. What isn't good is that this is an imposter. One reference we found says the flowers should face upwards, this doesn't but if it did, it would merit clonal naming. "Shi-ran" is simply the Japanese name for Bletilla which would suggest that this was a generic import by the Dutch from Japan. aarrgghh. Every source we have seen that lists this selection has this same plant. All of this said, it is a slightly darker form and not unlike one we grew years ago as 'Rosea' also from Holland.
From Japan, 'Shi-ran' has fragrant, deep purple orchid blooms in early summer, and pleated leaves from the base. Slowly traveling rhizomes create a pretty colony especially where soils are rich with humus. 30" T x 12 - 15" W Minimum temperature: -10°F
