This group gets its name from Greek, leirion, which means lily or in Greek mythology, after liriope, a fountain nymph and mother of Narcissus. These plants as a group are very adaptable to a wide range of exposures, soil conditions, and climates. They can tolerate excess moisture or severe drought and many adverse situations where nothing else would survive. Considering these attributes along with their diversity of textures, growth habits, colors, and extremely low maintenance requirements, there is little wonder that liriope is one of the most popular groundcovers on the planet. Native to Japan, China.
