Not all daffodils have ruffs of flat petals surrounding a fluted cup. Case in point, Rip Van Winkle, or as it's sometimes called "Sparkler", with flowers that bloom in an explosion of bright yellow rays. This heirloom narcissus has been delighting gardeners since the 1880s, about the same time the Statue of Liberty was placed in New York Harbor. (i.e. a very long time ago)

Rip' is a cutie. Early and dwarf, its spiky little blooms look like tiny yellow suns, cactus dahlias, sea anemones, or even mop-headed elves _ depending on your imagination. It's also cheap and wonderfully easy to force. 4 Y-Y, 6-8", zones 4-7bS/9bW
This little raskal blooms early spring. One of the nicest of the miniature daffodils. Photo courtesy of Paghat.com Daffodils are reliable naturalizers with long lasting flowers. Great for cut flowers or for announcing spring to the whole neighborhood. They bloom early and profusely. These 10 cm round bulbs are large for this variety. These are expected to produce 1-2 flower stems the first year and more ever after. PLEASE NOTE: Daffodils and other spring blooming bulbs can still be planted in spring, as long as there are several weeks of cool weather left. Plant only 2-3 inches deep because they don't have as long to reach the surface. They are also easy to force in areas with frozen soil. Just plant them in a pot, keep the pot in a cold but unfrozen room for a few weeks for root growth. Then bring them into a warm sunny window so they can grow and bloom.
An miniature, heirloom bulb, still snappy today with its late winter, double daffodils with frilly centers on stems to 12" tall -- like a fancy rose -- making a cheerful bouquet. Best with lots of sun, and better with sun and not too much water during their summer dormancy or winter rains, spreading to form clumps where happy. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8 with protection from long freezing bouts in the teens -- say near a house or tucked amongst rocks.
