At 4-6' this is the largest of this very fragrant Sweetbox tribe, this dense, glossy evergreen shrub has small creamy-white flowers who weave and wand their fragrant magic when spring is just a dream that one has (for sanity?s sake) to assume will come one day; showy black fruits add interest in fall and can persist into winter as well. Often sold as Sarcococca rusifolia, this evergreen shrub looks nearly identical to rusifolia, but is much hardier. Small white flowers appear in early spring and envelope the garden with a delicious, sweet fragrance. Grow in shade to filtered light, in humus-rich, moist well-drained soils. 4-5 feet high x 3-4 feet wide. Zone 6-9.
Is a 2’ suckering shrub. The deep green foliage is glossy all year. The white flowers are very sweetly fragrant early in the year. The plant will have black fruit in fall-winter.
White fragrant, vanilla flowers February, red to black berries, evergreen, slightly arching branches. USDA zones 7-9.
S. confusa has a lot of things going for it: It blooms in winter and when you walk by, the fragrance is wonderful in a season when you expect to smell nothing in the garden. It's much more fragrant than the more common, S. hookeriana. The white bloom is small and is on the bush at the same time as the glossy black berries which is just maturing from red from the previous year's blooms! How cool! It was introduced in 1916 so it's stood the test of time. It will take deep shade! Spreads by underground shoots.
