Sarcococca ruscifolia 'Dragon Gate' is more compact and arching than the species reaching about two feet tall and three feet wide with lush, evergreen foliage. The stems bear masses of fragrant white flowers in late winter and early spring that are followed by bright red berries. Use as an informal hedge, ground cover, or for evergreen accents in the garden or in containers where you can enjoy the winter fragrance. Can be grown from sun to shade including dry shade. Plants can slowly sucker given time but are not invasive.

Was discovered by Roy Lancaster in 1980. Still can't believe we had Roy speak in Eugene 3 times and I got to see his garden in England. Anyways S. Dragon's Gate' will get 3'-4' tall and has deep green narrow foliage. This woodland plant will flower in February and in fall will have lots of red fruit

Discovered in 1980 by Roy Lancaster in Yunnan China, and named Dragon Gate for the temple entrance near which it was found. With this prestigious provenance, a 4 ft, arching shrub with staunchly evergreen leaves, looking much like Danae racemosa. Very late autumn to mid winter flowers of creamy white followed by copious quantities of rich red berries. A wonderfully fragrant and handsome addition to the winter garden. Tolerant of deep shade to nearly full sun in all but the hottest climates. Appreciative of some summer water where dry. Frost hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7.

A Roy Lancaster introduction of the variety chinensis from Yunnan, China (which in of itself, is reason enough to have this plant in the collection but then Roy is a hero to us so we're biased but not without reason) of an invaluable winter blooming shrub tolerant of deep shade with white fragrant flowers from late fall into early winter. Superb shade evergreen shrub.
