Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Has soft yellow flowers in March. The hairy foliage comes from the maddenii series of rhododendrons. This Tibetian species is probably one of the hardiest of the maddenii series.
While this variety is a member of the Maddenii series, it is not tender like most. It may even deserve a hardier rating than 5o F. Under snow it survived the -12o F. experienced here in 1972. The foliage is bristly and hairy as are the branches. The leaves are 1" to 2" long and 1" across, turning deep attractive bronze in winter. The flowers are showy bright lemon yellow. Though rare, it is probably one of the most outstanding of the yellow rhododendrons. (RN, rn, Maddenia)
