Used to be Ledum groenlandicum. This small (18”) rhododendron has narrow small leaves that are dark green. In spring, the clusters of flowers are snow white. Very cute!
Rounded trusses appear in April and may contain up to 20 individual saucer-shaped flowers. Dark green leaves have woolly indumentum on the back. Has been found to tolerate cold, wetter soils than many other Rhododendrons.
Small, white, starry flowers blanket plant spring, evergreen, prefers humusy soil, regular water. Hardy to zone 5, (H1)
A unique selection for the early-mid spring garden. As the name suggests, the branches of this compact Lepidote Rhododendron are laden with clusters of starry white flowers in April. The small dark evergreen foliage, which has a brownish indumentum, is an attribute as is its compact 3' x 5' habit. Prefers a lot of sun in a moist yet well drained soil. Formerly classified as Ledum palustre.
Labrador Tea. Formerly a Ledum and now all Ledum are Rhododendrons. This is by far the best form of the species with compound trusses composed of 6-7 smaller trusses with each truss packed with up to 20 small white flowers. Rock hardy and a handsome evergreen.
This plant is aptly named, for when it blooms in early spring, it is blanketed with what appear to be a million white stars. The distinctive foliage is small and hairy. 'Milky Way' used to be classified in the genus Ledum, which has now been lumped with Rhododendron. By whatever name, you'll be glad to get to know it. Lepidote.
