Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Even after many, many years the red on this rhododendron is still the standard against which all other reds are measured. Bright red flowers open against very dark green foliage. Handles full sun and is often planted in those settings. Frequently sold simply as 'Jean Marie'.
Exceptionally long-lasting bright red blooms appear mid season in clusters, strikingly contrasted by dark emerald green foliage. Compact, dense growing habit. One of the few Rhododendrons that thrives in the heat and sun!
Practically every new red introduced must be judged against 'Jean Marie' (as it is often called) to see if it is better and few actually pass the grade. 'Jean Marie' has bright red flowers so showy that you can't miss them. The thick, heavy foliage stands sun and is deep emerald-green. Few plants have foliage as green. (griffithianum hybrid)
