    About Hosta

Hostas, also called plantain lilies, are long-lived perennials in the Asparagaceae family.

    Why grow Hosta?

Hostas can be used for anything from containers and rock gardens, to woodlands and shaded borders.

    How to care for Hosta

All hostas prefer evenly moist, rich soils with some level of shade. All are best with at least afternoon shade. Hostas are deciduous and the old leaves will often disappear completely by the following spring, but the old flower stalks will persist unless cut back. The leaves can also be cut back after turning yellow in fall if you prefer a tidier look or need to remove them to control slugs or diseases. Fungi and bacteria may attack hostas but generally aren’t an issue unless the plants are stressed. If slugs and snails are a problem, consider choosing varieties with thicker, more textured leaves, as they tend to be more resistant.

    Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This small but mighty hosta is a variegated sport of the award winning Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears'. In spring, the rounded leaves of heavy substance are blue-green with a creamy yellow margin. By summer, the leaves transition to grey-green with a creamy white margin. Incredible substance. Lavender flowers on perfectly proportioned scapes appear in early summer. Miniature hostas are great in shady containers or troughs, at the front of the border or along pathways. Dangerous for collectors who will want to have many more than just one! Photo courtesy of Walters Gardens.
This Walters sport of blue mouse ears is perfect for troughs, it features heavy thick bluish leaves broadly margined yellow in spring fading to cream later in summer. Purple flowers on short scapes complete the picture. This is destined to be a classic rock garden hosta.
Very attractive, thick, almost rubbery, nearly round, rich blue-green leaves with attractive yellow margins; Vigorous & pest resistant. Bell shaped rich violet striped lavender flowers in mid summer. Plant in morning or evening sun then afternoon shade, or light shade all day. Small hosta.
