Small Dutchman's pipe from Brazil to northern Argentina, a prostrate, deciduous ground cover to only 6" tall and 2-3 ft wide, the leaves heart-shaped with prominent, pale, netting following the veins. The exotic flowers, produced all summer, are striking, strong, curved green tubes, 1" across, with long hairs and interiors that are purple-brown, veined yellow. Good for hanging baskets where the flowers can be seen. Average summer water in gritty or sandy soil in sun to part shade in hottest climates. Evergreen where temperatures only dip into the 20sF. Deciduous with good autumn color at lower temperatures. Root hardy in USDA zone 7.
This hardy Dutchman’s Pipe is at its best cascading over a wall or spilling from a container where it lax 2’ stems can show off those weird, 1” alien flowers - curving, brown veined with long ‘hairs’ on the edges – all summer! It will also make a small patch of deciduous ground cover (evergreen to about 25 degrees). Rounded leaves have pretty silver veining. Best in part shade, well-drained soil with regular water. Swallowtail food plant. Grow as an annual in colder zones.
The Fringed Aristolochia has lax arching stems to 2' that rest on the ground or hang over the edge of a container. Curious yellow and maroon fringed flowers are like nothing else except perhaps the most unusual meerschaum pipe, and its silver-veined, green, rounded leaves are distinctive as well. Fascinating! Native to Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. Minimum temperature: 0°F
It takes a special sort of person to appreciate an atristolochia flower... I love them, so of course I consider it a sign of excellent taste. You could also argue it is a sign of being not-quite-right in the head. Flowers come all summer, and form crazy curved tubular bases, flaring open at the end and patterned with dark brown and a little halo of thread-like tendrils all around. Forms a spreading ground cover to two feet or so, only 6 inches tall. Like all aristolochia, an excellent food plant for the very beautiful pipevine swallowtail butterfly, though if you really want butterflies, you'd probably best grow one of the bigger species, as they have a voracious appetite and would eat this one down pretty darn quick. Zone 7
1" wide dark maroon pipe-like flowers are edged and veined in soft yellow and are edged in a loose yellow fringe and are borne from spring to fall. The 2-3" wide rounded to heart shaped foliage is accented by white veins and is used by the Pipevine Swallowtail as a host plant. Use Fringed Dutchman's Pipevine as a hardy deciduous groundcover, allow it to spill from containers, or in hanging baskets to better display the unusual flowers.
Beautiful medium green round leaves veined white set the background for the bloom or pipe which is one of the most interesting of the hardy Dutchman's Pipe. 1-2" long yellow and brown flowers, resembling miniature elephant trunks appear all summer. It looks like it has a gold beard! Great butterfly larvae food, pretty in the garden, or in appropriate zones, wonderful in a hanging basket due to it's prostrate habit and it's evergreen when brought inside. Also the hanging seed pods as well as the blooms are attractive resembling as one writer said, "ribbed little watermelons"!
