Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Dark, blood-red flowers on top of long slender leaves which are heavily coated with stiff bristles. Midrib of the leaves is coated with a thick layer of indumentum. I've had a long history with this plant as I first saw it in Ted Van Veen's book, Rhododendrons in America, in the late 60's. It remains one of my favorites.
This early-blooming species has tubular bell-shaped, deep red to crimson-scarlet flowers with dark red nectar pouches. The flat truss has 8-12 flowers. The leaves are elliptic to oblanceolate and are up to seven inches long often with recurved and bristly leaf edges. From northeastern Yunnan and Sichuan, China.
Fabulous species with early spring red flowers and followed by attractive new growth. Best with a high canopy of shade to buffer the late spring frosts from the early bloom and new growth. This is the Ben Nelson form which is one of the best.
Upright habit, with bristle new growth. Long narrow leaves 7"x 2" and bright green. Splashing deep blood-red flowers to 2 1/2" long are tubular bell-shaped, appearing in early spring in trusses of 8-12.
Deep blood red flowers.
