Maybe the most un-rhododendron. The orange yellow 2" tubes appear in April-May. The loose irregular plant will get 3'-4' tall. Leaves are long deeply veined. People buy this plant just because it's odd.
A very distinct species with bullate hairy leaves and upright clusters of unusual, tubular red to orange or pink flowers in mid- spring. Grown from seed collected in the wild. Very striking and always draws attention. Tolerant of full sun and drier conditions once established.
Narrow tubular scarlet crimson flowers, protruding stamen.
