Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Discovered by Mark Bloom when he worked at Bruce Brechtbill’s nursery, Eugene in the 1960’s. Mark saw a peach-pink truss on a branch of R. ’Unique’ and propagated it. The plant’s green, oval foliage makes a pretty backdrop for the rich peach-pink flowers.
The year was 1965 and as a high school student I was working at a local nursery. That spring I noticed a pink flower on a lower branch of the Rhododendron 'Unique' and mentioned it to my boss Bruce Brechtbill. We got 3 cuttings that fall. To make a long story short after Bruce's death in the early 70's this rhododendron was named for him. Obviously one of my favorites.
This hybrid looks and acts identical to 'Unique' until it flowers. Then you are graced with blooms that are pink with a touch of yellow in the throat. Since there are few rhododendrons that are sports and 'Unique' has about the best foliage around, what could be better than a pink 'Unique'! Absolutely well worth growing. (bud sport of 'Unique')
