Wow! We actually have this gorgeous native trillium. T. 'Kurabashii' grows in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon and northern California. The deep maroon flowers are showstoppers. Very rarely offered.
Sublime and sought after Trillium native to SW Oregon. These seedlings were chosen for their heavily marked foliage of contrasty burgundy-black by the O’Byrnes at Northwest Nursery. Sessile erect flowers are deep red on 12-18” stems April>May. Happiest in shade to part shade with well-drained, humus rich, moist soil, expanding slowly to 2’+ wide clumps. Our plants will be 6 years in 2024 so bloom should be imminent. An investment in classy ‘plant wow’ for years to come! (photo by Northwest Nursery)
Kurabayashii is one of the most sought after west coast native species. You'll find it in the woodlands of Southern Oregon if you are especially lucky. Mottled, large leaves and upright, rich deep red flowers will cause garden guests to draw in their breath in amazement. Given woodland humus and regular water, it will form a large, lush colony. These are seedlings raised here at the nursery so some variation in color can be expected. 18" T x 24" W clump. Minimum temperature: -10°F
Blooms: early spring, large rich red blooms, mottled dark purple and green leaves. Zone 5-9. 14", PNW, part sun, moist, humus rich, well drained
Surely one of the finest Trillium species and perhaps the most fervently desired plant in our shade garden. This is an uncommon species growing in southern Oregon and Northern California. Dark red sessile flowers with a slight twist of the petals stand at attention above maculated leaves.
Described from near the mouth of Oregon’s Rogue River in the early 70s and endemic to that region as a northernmost form or representative of T. chloropetalum. These seeds, second generation and now 4 year plants, grow to 18” with purple mottled leaves and brick red to occasionally orange-yellow flowers. Prefers summer dry in dappled shade but not difficult. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7. T. kurabayashii [Leach, N. CA]
