Strappy, wide pointed leaves with undulating burgundy margins are marked with toffee colored bands, textural and delectably colored! July > Sept blooms of waxy bronzed whitish-rose flowers have a tropical look. Bulbous perennial, 24-30" tall and 24-36" wide. Very architectural in leaf and in flower! This So African cultivar needs a sunny spot in mulched, well drained soil. We grow ours in good soil with semi-regular water.
With bronzy merlot-colored undulating margins, the olive-green swordlike foliage shows off reddish toffee-shaded linear streaks on top, while curious burgundy stipples and striations mark the undersides. The warm-looking, somewhat erect rosette gets a cheerful lift when staunch flower stalks transform into pastel columns of star-shaped rosy pink flowers topped by leafy forelocks. Zone 7/8.
Cultivar of a South African native, this one with light pink, “pineapple”-like flowers on contrasting mahogany stalks in August - September. Leaves are long, narrow and tropical looking. Plants emerge in spring and need water for proper growth. Best in bright light, full sun to part shade, where they can be protected from excess winter water, perhaps by an overhang. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7; lower with mulch. Can be grown in pots or lifted for the winter.
