Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Over the past 12 years I've been building quite a good stock of my personal favorite Trillium species, Trillium cuneatum, by rhizome division and now have more stock plants than I require. So, I'm offering you the opportunity to grow them in your garden. We've taken off our regular 3-5 year divisions and replanted our stock plants in 5" deep Anderson Treeband® Pots last Autumn and they are reestablishing themselves nicely. Trillium cuneatum is native to 11 Mid Atlantic and Southeastern states, but is hardy just about anywhere. Here's a plant that you will instantly fall in love with as its deep burgundy flowers bloom for an extremely long period of time in early to mid Spring. With the most exciting marbled foliage and with no two plants alike, their silvery leaves electrically light up even the shadiest of gardens. I wish I could say that Trilliums are fully deer proof, however this just isn't the case. But......... I can honestly say that it's not their first choice to munch on and in some years they completely ignore them. Again, they are very easy to grow and will give you and your garden visitors pleasure and enjoyment for many, many years to come.
Trillium cuneatum is one of the largest and most vigorous trilliums. Each plant features three mottled leaves in a terminal whorl subtending a solitary, maroon to dark red flower. Trillium are exquisite plants for the shade garden blooming in early to mid spring with their elegant flowers. They are spring ephemerals that may go dormant by summer. Keep in mind that they may go dormant early in the year they are first planted and could sulk a bit in their second year before settling in for beautiful displays for years to come.
Toad Shade, I love the name; I just wish my toads would use them. Large mottled leaves with red flowers in the axil. Flowers are not as sweet as luteum but who cares, a must for every collection. Cuneatum has been widely sold under the name sessile for years. Note that the woodlanders marked with an * ship either early to mid march or summer dormant.
Blooms: spring, red-maroon, sessile/ mottled dark purple-brown foliage, stunning Zone 6-9. 12"-18", EA US, part shade-shade, moist, humus rich, WD
Large mottled leaves with red flowers in the axil. 12" tall and up to 24" tall in a mature plant. This is often sold as Sessile but is much larger. Likes rich, moist, woodsy soil in shade to part shade. Flowers early spring. Zones 5-8, guessing since I can't find it's zoning, but judging from it's native range 5-8 would be about right.

One of the finest Trilliums for foliage and flower in its best forms. This Midwestern native has sessile or stemless flowers of a brownish maroon. Easy to please in the garden.
