Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The Bunya Pine is an ancient conifer native to eastern Australia that is today considered a living fossil and an ancestor to many modern conifer species found around the world. A close relative to the Monkey Puzzle Tree from Chile, the Bunya Pine has distinct and unique foliage that is more like scales than needles and with branching that is oddly symmetrical. Eventually, mature trees lose lower branches to form an umbrella of branches at the top of the tree, presumably to avoid the reach of herbivorous dinosaurs. In addition to the unique foliage, the Bunya Pine produces an edible nut that is prized in its native range. The truly massive cones contain dozens of nuts, which can be boiled or roasted and have a flavor much like pine nuts, albeit much much larger. Cold hardy to zone 8b and above, or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
