Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Bring an exotic look to the summer garden or potted container with this famous Egyptian water plant. Although perfectly happy growing with its feet in water, it will thrive like any other plant when supplied average moisture. An unbelievably fast grower, small plants in spring will reach 5' or more in a single season and create large full specimens. One requirement for optimum growth is a full sun exposure, which keeps the tall stems stiff and rigid.

Few plants are as elegant as this clump-forming reed. Graceful, arching, deep green, triangular stalks are topped by hair-like umbrellas that remind one of fireworks. Native to North Africa, it can reach 6’ - 8’ tall and so needs sufficient space. Naturally growing in water or moist soil, it’s very popular in water gardens. When used in small pools or fish ponds, plant it in its own underwater container to keep it from crowding other plants & to simplify maintenance. With regular watering, it also does well in garden soil in our coastal climate & makes a striking, tropical looking accent plant. Fabulous in a container & a wonderful and unusual cut flower.
