Agave potatorum "Kichiokan Marginata", also known as the Dwarf Variegated Butterfly Agave, is a small succulent native to Mexico, prized for its attractive variegated leaves and compact rosette form. Typically growing to less than a foot in height and 1-2 feet in width, it forms small rosettes with short gray leaves edged in pale yellow streaks and red spines. Mature plants have a hemispherical shape with upcurving leaves featuring yellow to pale green variegation along the margins. Slow-growing and highly sought after for its ornamental value, it is often cultivated in rock gardens, succulent gardens, or containers. While it may bloom at maturity with tall spikes bearing yellow flowers, its primary allure lies in its striking foliage. Thought to be a Japanese selection of Agave potatorum, its exact origin is unclear, but it is believed to be a nursery-produced cultivar. Thriving in full sun to light shade and well-drained soil, it can tolerate drought and heat but benefits from supplemental irrigation during hot weather. Cold hardy to at least 25-30°F, protection from frost is advised to prevent damage to the leaves. Widely grown for its ornamental value, this agave adds aesthetic appeal to various garden settings.
