Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Bouquet Wonder is a tough perennial sunflower with strong stems and bright yellow 3-4 inch wide flowers. The smaller flower size compared to many other sunflowers makes this an excellent variety for small and medium size bouquets where the larger varieties are too big. The stems are strong and the flowers point up slightly instead of down like with most other sunflower varieties. The flowers appear on this dense shrub in early June and continue blooming profusely until mid-September even without deadheading. Like other sunflowers, Bouquet Wonder is drought tolerant and tolerant of poor soils so can be grown in low-maintenance landscapes. They need full sun in all but the hottest of climates to produce their highest flower yields. The roots overwinter best when given 2-3 inches of mulch in the fall in colder growing zones, especially in areas with late spring frosts. Divisions are best made in the winter before any new shoots start to sprout towards the surface, once the shoot tips begin emerging from the soil in early spring they have started growing side roots that don't like to be disturbed. A single 3-5 eye division will typically form 20-30 shoots by the second year, with each shoot producing 5-10 branches with flowers.
