Wowzer! Huge 18"x12" leaves. One of the giants of the rhododendron world. The flowers are yellow bells. We know a local plant that has been through 0??F. But, we don't recommend it.
Three-inch, bell-shaped flowers with 8-10 lobes are creamy-white to pale yellow, with crimson blotches held in trusses of 20 or more. And now the leaves...the largest leaved of all rhododendrons. They can reach 30 inches!! Young growth is a silver gray, sometimes with a copper-colored overlay with silver-white or fawn-colored indumentum. Unfortunately, not real hardy, but if you're in a warmer winter area a truly spectacular plant to have for your collection.
R. sinogrande has the largest leaves of any rhododendron which can be THREE FEET LONG and ONE FOOT WIDE! Wow! Also spectacular is that the new foliage emerges copper red and shiny as if made of metal. The flowers are creamy yellow with a red central blotch. Grows to six feet in 10 years. Protect from winter cold snaps and do not plant in windy areas! From India, Burma and China. Photo borrowed from: http://www.hirsutum.info/rhododendron/species/detail.php?id=473
Someday these plant tags will have a motion activated microchip sound card which will have the heraldry of trumpets pealing forth when you pick up the tag. The King of the Big Leaves, this gets leaves easily 2' long and becomes an awesome small tree. Large light yellow flowers. Best in a sheltered spot.
The largest leaves of any rhododendron known, some extending up to 3 feet in length. A truly magnificent plant for those gardening in a temperate climate. Flowers are creamy white blotched with crimson
Creamy white to pale yellow, blotched crimson.
