Bold textured relative of the stunningly gorgeous Yucca rostrata, spending its very long youth as a 2 to 3 ft rosette of 1" wide, silver-blue leaves, eventually forming trunks to 5 to even 8 ft with small candelabras of white flowers in summer at maturity. This species from northern Mexico requires full sun to dappled shade in the most deserty areas and a touch of additional water in the driest spots. Not particular about soil as long as its not sitting in water. Our plants are putting on about 6" of trunk each season. Frost hardy in warm USDA zone 7.
Yucca rigida is a dramatic, trunk-forming, hardy species with a crown of stiff, sword-like, powder blue leaves first forming a low rosette and very slowly developing a trunk with age. White clusters of flowers rise 2-3 feet above the foliage. Resembles Y. rostrata but with much stiffer leaves. Hot sunny spots with good drainage. Photo: Wikipedia.

This large, trunking Yucca deserves more frequent use in gardens. The 2-3' long, narrow, icy blue swords offer the palest blue color of any Yucca. Beginning as a single stem, it eventually branches into a large, many headed tree somewhat resembling a Joshua tree. It is hardy, adaptable, and reasonably tolerant of moisture once established, but it likes heat and may require quite a lot of fertilizer to get going in cool climates. Native to northwestern Mexico, it is hardy to about 5 °F. To 25'
Possibly the prettiest of all Yuccas! With its distinctive powder blue leaves, dramatic silhouette & architectural fabulosity “Blue Yucca” is a designer’s “must have”. Creating a ground hugging spiky sphere of silvery blueness, with age it develops a stout, minimally branching, shaggy trunk to 12’ tall, with leaves 1” wide & 3’ long sporting a nasty hook at the tip. With some maturity, a beautiful 5 - 6’ stalk of creamy white bell flowers appear atop the foliage. Provide well drained soil & a bit of supplemental Summer water for best show. Architecturally awesome in a good sized container. Hardy to 5-10°F!
This tender Mexican species has an ornamental bluish coating on long narrow leaves.
