Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This little species was everywhere in nurseries in the 60's and 70's but has almost totally unknown to modern gardeners. The small bluish leaves cover this 18”x18”. The tiny (1”) deep purple flowers will totally cover a plant in the sun.
A dwarf alpine shrub forming low mounds covered in spring with purplish-blue funnel-shaped flowers. S-PSh/M/Acid
Dwarf mounding evergreen shrub with bluish purple flowers in April to May. Small gray green leaves are slightly aromatic. Discovered in the alpine regions of China in 1911, this lovely dwarf rhododendron does wonderfully in Pacific Northwest landscapes.
Great rock garden selection. Tiny leaves are an attractive silvery-gray.
Rhododendron impeditum TINY CLOUD Zones: 5-8. First photo from our garden RR shows Sky’s great grandfather, Bill Northway, delivering supplies to Corbett, Oregon in the Columbia Gorge. Note the hillside planted with Tiny Cloud our favorite mini rhododendron. It has very tiny, gray-green leaves and purple flowers in spring. Very slow growth. Second photo shows single plant in bloom. Untrimmed about 1 foot or less at 10 years, about 18 inches at 25 years. Tiny Cloud has many uses: Bonsai, rock garden, trough, or regular landscape. Needs typical Rhododendron care. These are mature plants shipped in gallon containers 10-14 inches, similar in size and shape in the photos. LiveScale©Choice-Miniature.
Evergreen, Blue-purple flowers spring, dense spreading mound, sun tolerant, regular water.
One of the best dwarf rhododendrons, this species has a tight compact habit with attractive silver-gray foliage. Bright blue-purple flowers make a nice contrast. David G. Leach, in Rhododendrons of the World, suggests an excellent use for it: "This is an ideal species for the rock garden, in the forefront of a shrub border or as an edging for beds. Planted about 15" apart, a number of plants will grow together to form an impenetrable ground cover, handsome at all seasons and especially effective when such an expanse becomes a blanket of blue flowers." One of the best plants possible for bonsai. (RN, rn, Lapponica)
