Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This species is somewhat reminiscent of a smaller version of the popular big-leaf species – R. rex ssp. fictolacteum . Beautiful large leaves and attractive flowers on a long-lived plant. The flowers (early spring) are white to pink and usually blotched. These are grown from seed collected in a newly explored region of the Sino-Himalaya. Beautiful, rich red-brown indumentum on the lower surface of the leaves – one of the best foliage plants in the genus.
Growth habit is open, upright, treelike, with spectacular foliage. Leaves, up to 10" long, are obovate and smooth shiny dark green on the top side. The fawn to bright cinnamon underside is the most fabulous indumentum of any rhododendron. Flowers, to 2" long are open funnel shaped, white blushed rose to deep rose, occasionally blotched and spotted crimson and are held in great loose rounded trusses of up to 20. This is a special species, not seen in many gardens. (HY, hy, Fulva)
