Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Pieris japonica is known both as Lily of the Valley and Japanese Andromeda, it is a dense evergreen shrub with bright red new growth and tough evergreen leaves. It is deer resistant and easy to grow in well drained and rich soils, we have grown it very successfully in clay soils as long as the plants don't get too much water in the summer. Once plants are established they are semi-drought tolerant, only requiring infrequent summer irrigation. Optimal growth and flowering is produced when plants are sited where they get some morning sun but receive shade in the afternoon.
Andromeda is frequently found in Japanese gardens where it is pruned short, typically only a few feet tall, and often in a layered form. When the leaves are trimmed short it makes an attractive bonsai specimen. Andromeda is also popular for an evergreen hedge, especially because it shears well and will sprout new growth from old wood.
