Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Dense pyramidal clusters of deep ruby red flowers sit atop sturdy stems above the medium green foliage of this exciting new Astilbe or False Spirea. Younique™ Ruby Red, the newest of the series, produces the feathery to fuzzy-looking spikes of flowers beginning earlier in the season, has improved disease resistance and a compact habit. Astilbe tend to be long lived clump forming perennials that are low maintenance and long flowering. *Where summers are cool Astilbe can tolerate full sunlight. They are tolerant of more shade as well but tend to flower best where they receive 4 or more hours of direct sunlight. In hot summer climates consider planting Astilbe on the east side of a structure or other object that will provide shade by about 11:00 AM. They prefer a soil rich in organic matter but also need good drainage and moderate fertility. Astilbe is considered to be a productive, easy to grow and low maintenance, long-lasting cut flower. The feathery spikes can be used on their own or as a colorful filler both in dried and fresh arrangements.
