Some say it is a hydrangea; others disagree. While the botanists are sorting it out, we'll keep it listed under Schizophragma. Great texture contrast between small new leaves and mature foliage. Slower to bloom, but foliage, alone, is worth it--small, serrated juvenile leaves! A lovely vine. Morning light - light shade, in moist, well-drained, fertile soil.
Schizophragma hydrangioides is a climbing vine that is superficially similar to Hydrangea anomala petiolaris; the main difference is the ray flowers have only a single petal (sepal). Brookside Littleleaf is, as you would guess tiny leaved, its also one of the finest climbing vines we grow.
Experts are still determining whether this lovely climbing shrub is truly Schizophragma or a subspecies of the climbing hydrangea Anamola. While waiting for the botanists to compile their decision, we'll just tell you 'you'll love it'. This climbers has petite but deeply serrated leaves. Graceful white blooms emerge in May and June but will decorate the plant all year, even after the first frost.
A very nice choice for a low wall where it can be appreciated up close. Dwarf in foliage and stems, dainty is the best description. This is an excellent choice for those who love the look of Hydrangea petiolaris but don't have the room. It was once thought that this was a Schizophragma but we have finally determined, through seeing it flower and with the help of several experts, that it's a miniature selection of that venerable vine.
A clinging vine that has smaller 1/2" juvenile leaves along with regular size mature leaves which makes for great texture and contrast. Try this shade lover on a wall or tree. Introduced by Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, (a beautiful place to visit by the way) this plant starts blooming, with their creamy white lace-cap blooms, a little later in life than other species BUT the interesting, crinkled foliage definitely makes it worth the wait.

(Little leaf when juvenile) We saw this plant at Brookside one fall climbing at least 20' up a tree with large leaves. All of the other plants we have seen have tiny leaves. Most of these plants have 1/2 inch leaves. Try this shade lover on a tree or wall.
