Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This glossy abelia was found in Michael A. Dirr's collection and we took cuttings off the plant in his garden. The name was inspired by the leaves - during the warm growing months they are yellow like sunshine, hence Sundance. In winter the leaves turn red in a full sun situation; while those in less sun turn bronze in a pretty way that enhances the colors of a winter garden. (I have notice that leaves shaded out by nearby plants remain green.) The tubular flowers are white inside and light pink outside - for garden design, they would go in the pink category more so than white. Individual flowers are held in a cluster and form a dome to look like one flower. Abelias are tough plants for zone 6a and warmer and are very popular due to their evergreen foliage and long flowering season. How long is the flowering season? Months! First the light pink flower heads last for weeks then, once the flowers fall off, the darker rosy sepals remain until autumn.
