Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Pink Cloud' Hydrangea has one of the lightest colored flowers of any of the Hydrangea varieties we grow, developing either very light pink or very light blue blooms. It is very useful for planting in dark areas where it will really light up the area but bring more color than white flowering plants. But 'Pink Cloud' is more popularly grown because of its very aggressive flowering and growth. We are always amazed at how quickly after propagation this plant will start to flower, in fact rooted cuttings are usually fully flushed out and blooming heavily within a month of being pulled from the cutting beds and potted up. It also tends to produce more foliage than other Hydrangeas before the branches produce a bloom. Where a lot of other varieties like All Summer Beauty produce three or four nodes and then a flower, 'Pink Cloud' often produces six or seven before terminating into a flower and so produces much longer stems and taller plants. The longer stems make this a good choice for bouquet production.
You can change the color of the flowers from pink to blue by changing the composition of the soil. Make the soil more acidic to produce light blue blooms, or neutral to slightly basic for pink. You can change the pH of your soil quite easily. If you want a pinker variety, add some ground lime (available at any garden center, nursery, even big box stores) or add either coffee grounds or Aluminum Sulfate (also available anywhere that sells plants) to make your flowers blue.
