Mahonia x media 'Underway' is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with green foliage. In winter yellow flowers emerge. Grows well with sun - mostly shade and regular water. Does well in clay and well-drained soil.
Among the first of the Mahonias to produce rich-yellow fragrant flowers (mid-late winter), this outstanding 6' evergreen shrub makes an excellent drought-tolerant, wildlife-approved!, accent or hedge. PSh/M/GDr
With familiar creamy yellow flower clusters during the shortest days of the year Underway is also slightly hardier and a little more compact than the other hybrid Mahonia selections. Earlier than Winter Sun. 1993 Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticulture Society originally selected at Slieve Donard Nursery, Northern Ireland.
Yellow blooms arrive in late autumn earlier than other Mahonias. Mounding evergreen growth to 8' in part shade. It has been suggested that 'Underway' prefers slightly more moisture during the summer.

This M. media hybrid has more cut leaves than some of the other forms. The flowers are the typical bright yellow in mid winter. This hybrid mahonia is much more difficult to find in the trade so we are happy to be able to list.
