    Mahonia x media 'Charity' plant details

    One of the many Mahonias prized for year-round value in the garden for their copious yellow spikes of fragrant flowers emerging in late fall, lasting through most of the winter, handsome evergreen foliage, and grey-blue fruit beloved by birds. The whorls of leaves of Mahonia 'Charity' are a bold, almost tropical-looking spirals on this medium large vase-shaped shrub. New growth often emerges in blushed tones. The mature holly-shaped leaves are a bit prickly, so it's best situated where passers-by won't be poked. An excellent architectural presence in the border.

    Mahonia x media 'Charity' is a moderate-growing broadleaf evergreen shrub with green foliage. In winter yellow flowers emerge followed by black and purple fruit. Features glossy texture. Grows well with sun - mostly shade and even moisture water. Drought tolerant once established. Does well in clay, rich and well-drained soil.

    One of the M. media hybrids (japonica x lomarifolia). One of our finest winter; actually year round shrubs. The evergreen foliage gets up to 18" long and 12" wide. Our big plants of the media hybrids are 12' tall and make an architectural form. The flowers begin to show color (bright yellow) in late November and continue until February. The fruit turns bluish-purple in the late spring. When the birds discover the fruit they immediately devour them.

    We will be pushing the limits here in zone 6 growing this Mahonia, but we've had requests from our Cape Cod and Long Island customers who have been wanting to try to grow this winter blooming evergreen. The bold dark evergreen foliage resembles a holly like fern, forming vase shaped shrubs up top 10' tall in milder zones. In early winter, spiky clusters of yellow flowers put on show, later maturing to blue-black fruit. Grow in a well drained soil and site in protected spot in colder climates, with Hellebores, and early early bulbs. Hardy to 0 °F.

    Guaranteed to chase away those wintertime doldrums, ‘Charity’ spotlights an ebullient fountain of small, bell-shaped canary yellow flowers. The grandiose leaves—pinnate, spiny and matt green—grow in magnificent whorls along coarsely branched stems while arching, sweet scented racemes burst forth above. Waxy, late summer berries held in grapelike bluish purple clusters are relished by birds and spark our interest for another season. Stellar as a statuesque specimen all year long, this upstanding evergreen develops an imposing vase figure that tolerates heavy clay, flourishes with a little shade on a loamy, well drained somewhat acidic site, and can be pruned back after flowering.     A candelabra of sizzling yellow flowers in winter is a very welcome sight on this handsome mahonia, a tall and vigorous evergreen plant that is quite architectural, flashy and easy to grow too. Fairly columnar and multi-stemmed, these are best planted away from paths where their prickly foliage may be experienced too closely. Full to part sun with some summer water, though somewhat drought tolerant when established. Frost hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7.
