This large leafed deciduous pig squeak is quite the foliage plant. The plant can get up to a couple feet wide in time. The large green leaves have bristly hairs. The flowers are pink rising above the foliage.
A very unusual Bergenia from Nepal – Large, hairy leaves have a great texture and sculptural appeal; clumps about 1’ tall and twice as wide – Pale pink flowers in early spring before leaves– Morning sun to moderate shade, well drained soils, prefers richer soils and adequate moisture; deciduous.
Bergenia ciliata ‘Dumbo’, sometimes called Pig Squeak, is an evergreen perennial with round, thick, glossy dark green foliage that blushes a lovely pink in winter. Attractive white to pale pink flowers bloom on upright stems in the spring. Prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Heartleaf Bergenia is good in borders, edgings, mass plantings, rock gardens, and as a groundcover.
Huge, rounded, supple leaves with a furry surface (ciliata) surround short red stalks with clusters of soft pink flowers, each containing a spritz of beautifully protruding white-anthered red stamens — a distinctive feature of this flower. Mid-spring bloom. Serving suggestion: contrast with Hakonechloa grass or Himalayan maidenhair (Adiantum venustum). 1' Tall x 2' Wide. Needs intermittent water if grown in shade and regular water if grown in sun.
