Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This apple was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson; so much so that he planted 32 of them in his orchard at Monticello. Famous for its 'perfect' balance between sweet and tart, it is considered a choice apple for dessert and fresh eating and it also is an excellent keeper. It is a pretty tree too, 15-20' with pink buds turning to white flowers in spring. The large fruit is blushed bright-red, late-season, and crisp, fine grained and tangy. 800 chill hours are required for fruit set. S/M
The Spitzenburg was discovered in New York State early in the 1800's. The fairly large red apples have a crisp flesh that are great for eatting right off the tree. Growth Rate medium, 6-12" annually
