Rarely offered small deciduous flowering tree with smokey, dark purple foliage that really sets off the pendulous clusters of fragrant white bell flowers May>June (sometimes blooms again in fall). Smaller growing than the species it can eventually reach 8'-15’ high and 4'-6’ wide. Sun to part shade (especially in hot areas), enjoys rich organic acidic soil with moderate moisture. Also nice as a specimen in a pot or even as a bonsai.

When I first saw this plant it was immediate lust. In full sun the foliage is so dark purple it's black. The flowers are stunning against the dark foliage. When grown in shade the foliage is more purplish.
