Nursery contributed plant descriptions

'Ivory Queen' is an extremely attractive Hosta variety that displays blue-green and cream variegation on medium-sized foliage and light purple flowers in the spring. It is very easy to grow and develops a clump about three feet in diameter after 1-2 years under typical conditions. Hostas are very shade tolerant plants and are useful as one of the few choices to bring color into dark spaces in the landscape. They thrive in many different soil types but need reasonable drainage during the winter as the roots can rot over the winter when planted in boggy conditions. Gardeners have trouble with slugs and snails in some climates when growing Hostas but we have found that an easy solution is to mulch the plant with 1-2 inches of finely shredded landscape bark each spring. The rough and jagged nature of the bark mulch significantly deters slugs and snails from visiting the area and is an effective solution for control with most plants.
