This white mophead reminds me of when an owner looks like their dog; in this case it's how the serrations on the sterile floret sepals match the serrations on the leaves - they are both accentuated on Mme. Emile Mouillere - really ruffly and busy. I like it. It's a little fussy and old-fashioned looking. There aren't too many white mopheads in circulation, and they all are truly different from each other. Once you learn this one, bingo, every time you see it (which won't be too often) you'll probably exclaim verbatim, "look, that's Madame Emile Mouillere white mophead hydrangea!" Or something very close to that mouthful. It's remontant to free flowering, which are other ways of saying Madame sure does flower a lot. It was pointed out to us that the sterile floret centers turn blue in acid and pink in alkaline soils. In the picture, the flowers are just opening and the centers are green. Also, flowers antique a faint shell pink with deeper pink spots - the fourth pic shows the flowers starting to turn pink.

Gracing gardens for an entire century, this vintage French glamor queen parades quantities of large, pure white flower clusters. The rounded mopheads include tightly packed serrated florets, which eventually open wide and push up against one another to produce a frilly feminine silhouette. Blooming on both old and new wood, and appreciating protection from hot sun, the stylish blossoms bounce back after a rain, unfurl until late in the season, and make unparalleled cut flowers, fresh or dried, while showcasing soft pink and lime-green brush strokes as they age. The tall robust frame, supported by unspotted stems and smooth, notched glossy green foliage, can be situated along a sheltered shady garden wall or the north side of a house.
A blizzard of white beauty all summer. This classic white hydrangea persists year after year against all the competition. Loads of blossoms for repeated displays in light sun or shade, Madame Emile has blossoms with a pink or blue eye. The petals become dotted with pink as they age. This vigorous, cold-resistant beauty has all the best qualities including luxuriant, glossy foliage that turns to autumn colors of red, orange and green setting off its flawless blooms. You'll find it easy to grow and more impressive each year.
Of all the macrophyllas, there are only a few "must haves" for any garden, and this is one. Large clear white mophead flowers in early summer, dark green clean foliage, and often a rebloom in early fall. Makes a great cut flower or dried flower, too.

One of the very best of the white flowered Hydrangea macrophyllas, this can get a small pink or blue eye in the center of each flower. Sumptious and provocatively blowsy as befitting a Madam or Mademoiselle in this case. Sun tolerant with good red and purple fall color. Months of flower color.
