Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Commonly known as the Mimosa, this ornamental tree has graceful spreading branches and upon maturity becomes a lovely umbrella shaped specimen. Foliage is handsome and lacy looking made up of deep-green, bipinnate compound leaves (which close when touched and night!). Distinctive, fragrant, pink powder-puff flower heads persist from late summer into fall and are attractive to bees. The species, julibrissin, is a corruption of the Persian word 'gul-i abrisham' meaning 'silk flower'. S/M-D/GDr
A broad, spreading tree with finely textured foliage and pink, silky, "powder puff" blooms in the summer. It is often grown as a multi-stemmed tree. It adapts well to drought, high pH and soil salinity. Native to Iran, it was first introduced in the US in 1745.
This beautiful small tree has luxuriant feathery foliage topped for 2-3 months in summer with masses of fuzzy pink spheres. It is one of the few flowering trees that bloom in the summer and thus extremely useful. Overall this is a great subtropical contribution to the garden. The wood of this tree is not particularly strong, so plant where it will be protected from our winter wind storms.
4-6" clusters of 1" pink fuzzy rounded blooms are borne in summer. A fast growing tree with a broad rounded crown and fine fern-like foliage.
Blooms: summer, silky, pink-red/ Feathery deciduous, compound leaves, tropical looking. Zone 6-10. 20', Japan, sun-part shade, moist, well drained
Sure, it's messy and you don't want it over your patio. But if you can find a prettier tree in bloom I'd love to know what it is! Just place it in a grassy spot where the sticky sap isn't a problem. (My son's favorite tree!) It's naturalized over Virginia and elsewhere but was originally from China. The Pink Powder-Puff flowers are very distinctive and beautiful over fine-textured foliage. And, how many other trees bloom all summer? I think the answer is 'None'. Like the Buckeye above, it attracts Hummingbirds, another rare attribute. Unlike the Buckeye, however, it is drought tolerant.
