Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Bergenia 'Magic Giant' is a hybrid cultivar with extra large, rich green leaves with red undersides up to 12 inches long and nine inches wide that turn shades of lustrous purple and bronze in the winter months and almost look subtropical due to their size. The deep rose pink spring flowers with red centres are held in dense clusters on red stems. Grow Bergenia at the front of the border, on slopes, on walls, and in containers. They look amazing in drifts.
Giant (12" long and 9" wide), thick, evergreen oval leaves are vivid green in spring through summer becoming varnished (as someone has said) with red-bronze on a leatherette surface in fall and winter. Contrast this bold shape with fine-leafed plants for maximum effect. Merlot stems support thick clusters of rosy-pink waxy looking flowers (think Saxifragaceae) in April and May. 16" T x 18" W. A good easy ground cover that completely shades out weeds, or a focal point where some large shape and evergreen color is needed.
Big varnished rosettes of thick, extra large rounded evergreen foliage beams purplish bronze colors that indeed work magic on a bleak winter landscape. A verdant foil the rest of the year, dark green leaves reach up to a foot long and 9 in. across, while supporting dense rosy pink flower clusters, defined by red centers, white stamens and open starry faces on stout wine-hued stems. Bedazzled with jewel tones and texture galore, this hybrid Bergenia crafts an exceptional, easy care ground cover for moist poorly drained banks, stream sides or borders.
