Ya gotta love nearly indestructible Yuccas. They're deer resistant, drought tolerant, deal well with dry heat & on top of all that, this one rewards the garden every Spring with a big honking 3-4' tall creamy white flower that pollinators love. Grey-blue, narrow & sharply pointed leaves 20-40" long form a slow growing, usually stemless rosette to 4' wide & 4' tall. Named for its 4-6" long banana shaped edible fruits that reportedly taste like sweet potatoes when baked, natives have used it for centuries as a food source & the leaves for basketry. Native to AZ, CA, CO, NM, NV, TX & UT, it's best adapted to low humidity climates & can take temps as cold as -20 °F. The perfect sculptural addition to any dry garden!
The stout sword-like leaves of blue-green make an attractive accent in a sunny garden, especially when they hold 1-3' spikes of large, pendulous white flowers; Indians of the SW prized this plant for baskets, soap ; food. SUN/Med-Dry/GdDrain
This trunk-forming yucca is a knockout in the landscape with curving trunks -- up to 10 per plant -- that snake out and stand up to 8 ft tall. Green leaves are stiff and decorated with longish filifers. Very architectural! In early summer, short flower stalks carry abundant white flowers. Full sun with excellent drainage, and, for best appearance, occasional summer water. Frost hardy to -20 °F, USDA zone 5 and possibly colder.
