Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Purple Smokebush, also called Purple Smoketree, is a variant with not only purple leaves but also dark purple flowers in the summer. It is fairly drought tolerant once established and is often used for border plantings in rows. Add plants with yellow in front, such as Goldfinger Potentilla or Moonshine Achillea for maximum landscape contrast. Trees require little pruning but look best when pruned back hard in winter the first few years to ensure heavy branching and flowering low down on the plant.

Propagating Smoke Bush
A lot of seedlings will maintain the purple coloring of the parents, but some will come up green. Softwood cuttings are successful in early summer, these do best if misted.
Deep purple leaves which hold color throughout the summer. Economical alternative to more expensive cultivars, these can be potted up for a popular, easy to grow promo item in the GC. The few greenish plants which emerge in our seedling benches are pulled out early, so you're assured of receiving plants with uniform, dark purple leaves.
Grown from seed, these attractive drought-tolerant large shrubs will be varying shades of purple but with similar showy, smoky-pink flowers & fall color. SUN/Med-Dry
