Double-flowered oakleaf hydrangea, foliage turns crimson red in autumn

It was a fortuitous moment when Hydrangea enthusiast Eddie Aldridge and his father happened upon this sumptuous Hydrangea in the woodlands of Jefferson County, Alabama. Premiering enormous 15 in. long white panicles that can extend upward, outward or pendulously, the coarse textured, leathery anchor of large, oaklike foliage burnishes deep burgundy come fall and holds its handsome leaves well into December. The unique, two-toned double flowered effect is created when numerous tiered sepals first emerge white, while older ones below develop dark dusty pink shades with age. Considered by Michael Dirr to be the most beautiful of the sterile flowering cultivars, 'Snowflake's blooms open a little later, seem to last longer than the single quercifolias, and should be showcased in a favored location.

The Oakleaf Hydrangeas share many characteristics: namely white flowers with big lobed leaves that turn maroon in the fall. Double-flowered 'Snowflake' may have the largest inflorescences, which are usually upright. Prefers light shade.

Our favorite Oakleaf hydrangea. Our cultivar stays 5 to 6 feet, which is quite compact for the Oakleaf family. The double blooms are very full and large and will flop over due to the weight. You won't mind the floppy nature when the blooms fade to pink and the leaves turn red in the fall. This is a must for all Oakleaf loving gardeners! We grow it in our garden just for the fall color. Most Oakleaf Hydrangeas are single blooming. 'Snowflake' to her credit, however, features a blooms that appears to be double. Snowflake', the exquisite double flowering selection of Oakleaf Hydrangea, is a classic plant for the summer garden. We've discovered 'Snowflake' really needs more shade to be at its best, where it will grow 6-8' tall and wide, with panicles of bodacious multi petaled creamy white and celadon florets. Same as other great oakleaf characteristics, except the flowers are double hose in hose style. Flowers within flowers continue to open all summer. Little on the fussy side in heat, but worth the trouble!!

Multiple sepals emerge on top of old ones, creating a double or compound look. The older florets turn pink as they age, giving the 12 to 15" panicles a lovely two-toned effect, making this one of the most beautiful sterile flowering forms available. Prefers partial shade and moist soil.
