Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Rich pink 2" tubular flowers emerge from the dark colored bracts of this free flowering tropical perennial from late spring to fall. The large dark green tropical foliage acts as a wonderful foil for the pinecone shaped flowers. An excellent choice for a warm shaded patio as a specimen plant or in mixed containers. Jacobinia's are considered by many to be root hardy perennials even in zone 8 with protection and a mulch. Provide them with average moisture for best results. We typically see these Justicias growing to 24-36" tall but they are known to get as large as 5-7' where winter freezes don't cut them back. Many resources suggest that they will grow in full sun and they may well do fine in northern latitudes during summer but in areas with hot summers they should be grown in light shade.
