Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Jack's Quarter Pounder certainly lives up to its name producing extra large generally bronze colored, pear shaped figs with an amber to strawberry red flesh with a sweet flavor. The eye is small to open making it somewhat resistant to spoiling. This is a recent 'found' fig that was introduced by Jack Thomas from Georgia and so it should certainly do well in the South and Southeastern US. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy. A deep organic mulch will help to alleviate extremes in moisture levels, reduce nematode issues, as well as to reduce competition from weeds.
