Hardy to 0°F and small enough (to 8' x 8') for a large container or small yard, this fig from the Louisiana State University produces a good crop of medium sized yummy sweet fruit (to eat/can/dry) in late summer. S-PSh/M
How can you improve on Celeste, the Honey fig? Well here you go, Improved Celeste produces good crops of very sweet, small to medium sized light violet to violet-brown fruit with reddish amber flesh. It may produce a light breba crop but the main crop produces a large yield of delicious fruit. The tightly closed eye makes it resistant to spoiling and so it is a good choice for the Southeast. Ripens with Celeste in June. A small productive and hardy tree.By some accounts Improved Celeste was an early release of what is now the O'Rourke fig and is a product of Dr. Ed O'Rourke's breeding program at LSU. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy. A deep organic mulch will help to alleviate extremes in moisture levels, reduce nematode issues, as well as to reduce competition from weeds.
