Mt. Airy' is a wonderful hybrid discovered by plantsman Michael Dirr at the Mt. Airy arboretum in Ohio. Much smaller than the straight species (growing to 3-5 feet tall and nearly as wide), 'Mt. Airy' is much more suited to most landscapes. Larger, fragrant, white flower puffs cover this beautiful eastern native upright shrub in early spring before the leaves emerge, pretty green foliage becomes a spectacular show in autumn! S/M
Mount Airy Fothergilla is a beautiful addition to shrub borders or as a background plant in a partially shaded garden. Prune yearly in winter to promote new growth. The fuzzy honey scented blooms of Mount Airy Fothergilla delights the senses before the leaves come out in the spring. The lush blue-green leaves of summer turn brilliant colors in the fall.
Mt. Airy' Fothergilla is one of our favorite small shrubs due to its compact growth, attractive leaves, and very unusual bottlebrush-like flowers. It is related to Witch Hazel trees and has a similar leaf shape, but the leaves are much smaller which allows this variety to produce a very attractive bonsai. The plants form a small shrub with a spread and height of around five feet. Fothergilla will grow in both sun or shade, but the fall leaf color seems to be far superior on plants grown in the sun. The leaves take on an attractive mix of orange, red, and yellow in fall for up to 6 weeks before dropping off.
Originating in the Southeast, deciduous Fothergilla bears the name of a British physician who specialized in growing American plants. Selected by Mike Dirr, 'Mount Airy' is an outstanding new cultivar featuring attractive leaves, good-sized blooms and consistently spectacular red, orange and yellow autumn color. Possibly a hybrid between Fothergilla gardenii and Fothergilla major, this vigorous upright shrub has handsome, heavily textured deep green foliage with whitish undersides and an abundance of fragrant white flowers borne in large terminal clusters.
Mount Airy has excellent multiple fall colors from red through yellow, and is a prolific bloomer in the early spring. The best and most reliable clone for outstanding fall colors. Grows larger than others eventually to 3' to 5'. From the Mt. Airy Arboretum in Cincinatti, OH. Awards: Georgia Gold Medal Winner. Recommended by: Garden Clubs of America.

This is a beautiful selection of our native Fothergilla which produces masses of frilly, creamy white blooms before the foliage emerges in spring. Blue-green textured foliage changes to reds, oranges, and yellow in fall. A tough and easily grown dwarf shrub.
Fragrant, white bottlebrush flowers spring, orange, yellow & red fall, deciduous. Zones 4-8
Fantastic bottlebrush flowers with a honey-like fragrance in spring, followed by handsome blue-green foliage in summer, fabulous orange/yellow/ red fall color.

By: Specialty Ornamentals

A dense twiggy shrub to 6', the spring flowers are fragrant white bottlebrush and the fall color is spectacularly varied.
A new selection introduced by Michael Dirr -- the guy who wrote the green book that every nurseryman runs for when they have a shrub question! Selected for good dark green foliage, superb, consistent yellow-orange-red fall color, abundant flowers and more upright form. The white flowers are FRAGRANT. A trouble-free Native. Mixes well with Azaleas & Rhododendrons with a totally different effect than they have. Needs some shade in warmer zone. Great Plant Picks - Miller Botanical Garden. Is probably a cross between two southeastern U. S. natives, F. gardenii and F. major. It is taller than the former but shorter than the latter and blooms before foliage.

By: Lazy S'S Farm Nursery

An outstanding cultivar selected by Michael Dirr from the Mount Airy Arboretum in Cincinnati, Ohio, for its consistent fall coloration, heavy bloom, and vigor. The fragrant midspring flowers are the familiar creamy bottlebrushes; the fall color is a spectacular blend of yellow, orange, and red. Grows larger than F. gardenii and has a rounded habit. GPP award. 5-6' x 5'.
This form of fothergilla was named by Michael Dirr who says it's the brightest fall foliage of all the F. gardenii. The plant should get 6-8' tall. From Mt. Airy Cemetery in Cincinnati. Has been hardy to -25°F.
