Tricyrtis formosana ‘Dark Beauty’ displays exotic lavender flowers with heavy purple-blue spotting on arching stems. Toad Lily is a compact, mounding perennial with dark green foliage. If you need a fall blooming plant for the shade garden. Tricyrtis is a great choice. It prefers a moist but well-drained garden soil. Toad Lilies are generally late to emerge in spring.
I think the toad lilies are marvelous. Unfortunately, they are less well known than they deserve since they bloom in late summer and fall. If they bloomed in spring when everyone was shopping they would be very popular. Trust me and try one out! Tricyrtis 'Dark Beauty' has loose cymes of amazing, white orchid-like flowers with multitudes of magenta-purple spots. These are borne on tall, upright stems with semi-clasping, slightly hairy, dark green, long oval leaves.
An easy taller Toad Lily (can grow to 3-4' tall in the right conditions) with 2" purple spotted orchid-like flowers in September and October. 'Dark Beauty' is a welcome addition for fall color and is easy and will multiply if given an evenly moist soil with good winter drainage.
