Nursery contributed plant descriptions

These fabulous late summer bloomers, from California plantsman Wayne Roderick, attract flocks...well, crowds, gangs, companies... of hummingbirds to their bright red, tubular flowers. A small, deciduous shrub, to only a foot tall or so with very, very silver foliage. Perfect in a sunny rock garden or hillside with lean soil. These like a bit more summer water than their truly drought tolerant relatives, so occasional water where dry. (Occasionally included in the genus Epilobium.) Frost hardy in USDA zone 8.
Set aglow by a plethora of large dazzling scarlet-soaked trumpets, narrow velvety silver leaves attire a tightset, low handsome mound. This slow spreading hummingbird minion sprung from seeds collected by the great plantsman, Wayne Roderick. A native Californian sun-lover that appreciates well-drained soil and infrequent pinchings to maintain its fine textured form, 'Wayne's Silver' stays evergreen in milder locales and cheerfully conquers hot and dry, difficult exposed sites, such as south facing slopes, walls and embankments.
Precious platinum foliage & loud, flashy crimson trumpets make a stunning show through Summer & late into Fall. How can you not love our native Zauschnerias/Epilobiums? Honestly, I don't care what they're called, just keep that color coming. To 1' high & 1-3' wide, 'Wayne's Silver' is an excellent choice for the dry border or parking strip, large pots & definitely & most importantly, anywhere you'd like to sit & watch your dear hummingbird neighbors stage turf wars. Compared to other "California Fuchsias" you might know, this one is more compact & less rampant in growth, but it's still rugged & reliable. An occasional deep soak will keep this plant in primo shape. Dormant & deciduous in Winter months, it emerges green-leaved & fresh in the Spring & quickly develops its characteristic (& fantastic) metallic sheen.
