Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Fancy pants 'Violetto' is the official "Aristocrat of Artichokes". Hailing from Northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna province, 'Violetto' pumps out deliciously tender, purple bracted 3" x 5" chokes in profusion. Pick them when they're young & compact for little to no choke. Nearly spineless, too! To 5' tall. Artichokes are easy plants to grow, but BIG. Give them at least a 3' footprint in an unsheltered, sunny spot. Artichokes LOVE the Bay Area & thrive near the coast. If you leave the buds growing on the plant they make gorgeous purple blooms that would stop any bee in its tracks! These are also great cut or dried. Feed monthly & plant in rich soil for best results! Summer water optional.
